London : General Information
One of Europe’s most influential cities, London is the capital of the UK and the country’s authority on culture and the arts. This cosmopolitan metropolis is home to over seven million and has no trouble in attracting tourists from around the globe, who come for a taste of its historic monuments, world-famous museums and excellent entertainment options.
As the largest city in Europe, London serves as a major financial, cultural and business centre. The City district is one of London’s most modern, characterised by architectural gems such as the Gherkin and complemented by the high class areas of Mayfair, St James and Piccadilly.
Covent Garden and Soho are extremely popular among visitors for their shops, restaurants and bars, while the largely residential districts of Knightsbridge, Kensington and Chelsea ooze with wealth and designer boutiques. Meanwhile, Westminster is home to some of London’s most significant landmarks, including Big Ben.
Getting around the city on foot is easy, while the London Underground connects all of the city’s districts with frequent and inexpensive trains. When services come to a halt, night buses take over, while taxis are available at all hours. Many establishments are closed on Sunday’s and public transport is limited. |
